Where Is the Line Between Mental Health Diagnosis and Accountability?

I have a legitimate question, Where is the line between mental health diagnosis and accountability? When do we look in the mirror and ask ourselves, how can we grow?

I’ve recently run into a head-spinning and reflective moment when I encountered — let’s say — a friend of a friend who has been diagnosed with ADHD and other mental health struggles. While I don’t discredit this diagnosis, it unfortunately sends a chilling cringe down my spine when she utilizes it as a crutch for her behavior and lack of wanting to change. She reminds me of, well, me! A version of myself before looking in the mirror and taking accountability.

When it comes to diagnosis of any kind, it can be a heavy hitter. However, regarding mental health, sometimes (not always) we can be the root of our internal detriment.

During my reflection period, one of the things I’ve learned to do is ask myself questions regarding how I’m feeling, followed by diggers — those questions that prompt deeper dives to obtain the truest answer or root of our mental disrupts.
