Hmmm…has the spiritual trend gotten out of hand?
My experience with spirituality and the Pros and Cons that came with it
Once upon a time I sat on a bathroom floor and cried over a man who I believed was everything to me. In the midst of heartache, I latched on to witchcraft, something I was curious about as a kid but never pursued for fear of societal and family ridicule.
During this time, I also fell down the spiritual awakening rabbit hole thus leading me to empowerment, conscious living (overly conscious), confidence building, self-awareness, symbolism seeking, and over 1000 tarot videos on YouTube.
What in the entire fuckery have I stepped into?
When seeking healing goes haywire
I will admit, curiosity initially led me down the path of spirituality as well as a way to pass and mask the emotions from that heartbreaking day. I found myself engulfed in readings and spiritual influencers talking about signs, symbolisms, astrological meanings, deities, angels, dreams, spiritual gifts, etc. It was exciting at first and then it became excruciatingly overwhelming. I found myself with more questions than answers.
After a while I started only taking things that resonated with me in order to help expand and grow. That way of thinking was pretty chill and on the plus side help me gain confidence and belief in myself.
The pros and cons of this spiritual trend
PROS
I have found a few pros with utilizing today’s popular trend:
- Learning about the many facets of spirituality is another form of education which in itself is always a plus; learning is ever going.
- Some teachings are great for confidence building, motivation, and gives a more positive look on life circumstances.
- Having a sense of belief in something helps get you through even the toughest of times.
- Some parts of this, like spiritual gifts and synchronicities are actually fun if they play out.
- It can help with self-awareness, discovery of who you are, and provide a form of self-help.
For me, the positives of spirituality have given me a push in my life to move forward with living it according to me, or the overly popular and formal phrase, “living authentically”. That in itself was something I definitely needed to discover as it has help me embrace myself and embark on this new life adventure.
CONS
Oh boy the cons, YIKES:
- If you allow it, you can become overly obsessed with every bit of information.
- You might feel you are doomed to every tarot premonition or bad omen that appears.
- You may over think the most simplistic things.
- You may inadvertently train your brain to see number synchronicities (111, 222, 1212).
- You may over analyze your dreams and day to day living.
- You may stop actually living because you compare every aspect to spirituality.
I am currently rewiring myself from the cons as I have found they are very hindering and mentally debilitating.
The Mental toll of spirituality
I wave the white flag and bow out of most of these spiritual nooks and crannies. It has given me or rather I have allowed this overly searched subject to take over my basic way of thinking and living.
I have always been an over thinker, but I feel I am to the point of possible no return with this added aspect. To be honest, I believe I need counseling just for this obsession, and this is outside of my past livelihood and mental health struggles.
I find that I have fell into the abyss of all of this and am slowly beginning to trust more of myself than what I read and see on social media. At the end of the day aren’t we here to experience, learn, and live for us?
Overview
Life is such an amazing and complicated thing and sometimes I believe we truly over think it. We put so much emphasis on outside recognition and subject matter in order to take one single step. We follow trends in hopes they are true and in hopes that it will make life easier and more digestible, guilty as charged.
In the same breath trends can build positive and negative communities. It can cause backlash, headbutts, labels, judgments, and ridicule but it can also build friendships, spark ideas, and increase love.
I’m not saying spirituality is all bad but just like anything else, it can take away from its true essence, meaning, and your everyday life if you let it absorb you.
